News for the 7 Eligible Official World Golf Ranking Tournaments

PGA Tour - Farmers Insurance Open

In just his third start as a PGA TOUR member, Matthieu Pavon is a PGA TOUR winner. The Frenchman entered the winner’s circle in dramatic fashion at the Farmers Insurance Open, draining an 8-foot birdie on the 72nd hole at Torrey Pines’ South Course for a one-stroke victory over Nicolai Højgaard.

Pavon carded a final-round, 3-under 69 outside San Diego to finish at 13-under 275, rebounding from a missed 3-foot par putt at the 17th hole to finish with a flourish, muscling a 145-yard third shot from thick, rough on the par-5 18th to makeable range; he didn’t miss a beat.

Pavon becomes the first Frenchman to win on TOUR since Arnaud Massy at The Open in 1907, quickly acclimating to this stage after earning dual TOUR membership via the 2023 DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai. Last fall, Pavon made four consecutive closing birdies at the DP World Tour Championship to secure that status, and the affable 31-year-old proved again this week that he can deliver under the brightest lights.

Pavon is now exempt into 2024’s remaining Signature Events, including next week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and has secured a TOUR card through 2026. “I finally got a shot, and I took it,” Pavon said. “I mean, it's a dream come true and it's a little bit hard to believe.” Why stop now?

DP World Tour - Ras Al Khaimah Championship

Thorbjørn Olesen won his eighth DP World Tour title in convincing fashion with a closing 67 at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship. The Dane entered the final day at Al Hamra Golf Club four shots clear of Rasmus Højgaard but saw that lead wiped out within seven holes as his countryman made a blistering start.

A stunning eagle and three-shot swing on the next completely changed the complexion of the day, however, and Olesen eased to a six-shot win at 27 under. Højgaard signed for a 69 to finish at 21 under, one shot clear of Frenchman Frederic Lacroix, who ended his week with a 68. Olesen's total of 261 - which included a course-record equalling 62 on Friday - is the lowest of the season, with his score to par also the lowest of the season by seven strokes.

His six-shot winning margin is also the biggest of the season so far and Olesen has now won in three consecutive seasons and seven times out of eight when holding the 54-hole lead. He moves up to sixth in the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex and could go as high as 57th on the Official World Golf Ranking, his highest position since June 2019.

"It's very special," said UAE-based Olesen, whose family were present to see his win. "Standing here with (son) Cooper makes it a little more special.

"It was still a battle out there, it got close and you've got one of the most talented players right behind you so I knew it was going to be tough and we were tied for the lead very quickly.

"I played some nice golf coming in and holed the right putts at the right time.

Sunshine Tour - Mediclinic Invitational

Ryan van Velzen claimed his third Sunshine Tour victory in 10 months when he won the Mediclinic Invitational by four shots in a dominant performance at Maccauvlei Golf Club on Sunday.

The 22-year-old Van Velzen carded a final round of 64 – his second 64 of the weekend – to finish on 25 under par overall, with Neil Schietekat taking second place on 21 under par following a closing 67. LB Boshoff, Jason Roets, Jovan Rebula, Dylan Mostert and Yurav Premlall shared third place on 18 under par.

Van Velzen’s victory comes on the back of a strong summer where he challenged for the DP World Tour co-sanctioned Investec South African Open before finishing second, and also adds to his wins in the Limpopo Championship and the Bain’s Whisky Ubunye Team Championship last year.

But this latest triumph has surprised even him considering the long holiday he took before returning to competition again this week. “I can’t explain it actually. I took a month off from the game and it just came back to me. I got better without practising,” he said.

PGA Tour of Australasia - Webex Players Series Hosted by Geoff Ogilvy

Kazuma Kobori holed a 12-foot putt down the hill at Rosebud Country Club’s 18th green and the 72nd hole of the Webex Players Series Victoria to write his own little piece of history today.

The brilliant, young New Zealander, just eight tournaments into his professional career, completed back-to-back wins on the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia, a feat not managed since Adam Scott in 2013. The 22-year-old from Christchurch had won his first tournament as a professional in Cobram Barooga last weekend and now jumps to second in the Order of Merit, giving himself a strong chance of earning a DP World Tour card for next season.

At 18-under, he beat Malaysia’s Ashley Lau by a shot, with veteran Mat Goggin outright third at 16-under. “They always say the first win’s hard, and I’ll tell you what, I can speak about it now that the second one’s just as hard, but I’m glad to get the job done.” Kobori said.

ProGolf Tour - Red Sea Ain Sokhna Open

Fiorino Clerici from Switzerland wins the Red Sea Ain Sokhna Open at the Golf Club Ain Sokhna and thus the first tournament of the new Pro Golf Tour season. With an overall score of -12, winning with a one-stroke lead over French Player Hugo Legeay-Gaucher and the Germans Philipp Macionga and Linus Lang.

It has become a tradition on the Pro Golf Tour: the new season is being heralded in Egypt for the tenth time and once again the Ain Sokhna Golf Club on the west coast of the Gulf of Suez offered the ideal conditions to open the new golf year in style. 102 players had registered for the Red Sea Ain Sokhna Open 2024 and were competing for the first points for the Order of Merit. The top five in the overall standings will also receive a tour card for the Challenge Tour this year. However, there is still a long way to go until then. There are 16 tournaments in seven countries on the 2024 calendar. The season got off to a picturesque start under palm trees at the Red Sea Ain Sokhna Open final, but presumably none of the title contenders had an eye for them.

There was no sign of a quiet start to the new season. The first title fight was exciting right to the end. When the final group turned onto the second nine of their third and final round, eight players were within one stroke of each other. No one in the leading group was able to pull away early and so the decision was only made on the final hole. Swiss player Fiorino Clerici and Linus Lang from Germany were tied on 18. "It was a good match on a fair level and it was hard-fought," said Clerici after the round. In the end, the 28-year-old Swiss player benefited from a bogey by his German opponent and was therefore the lucky winner of the opening tournament of the new season.
