Major Championship - U.S. PGA CHAMPIONSHIP
Scottie Scheffler has clinched the 107th PGA Championship, showcasing both his exceptional talent and formidable mental resilience at Quail Hollow. Despite an uncharacteristic opening nine holes on Sunday, where wayward shots to the left saw his five-stroke lead dwindle, Scheffler found an inner "switch" to regain control.
After a front nine of two-over 37, the American trailed Jon Rahm, who had mounted a strong comeback. However, Scheffler's back nine performance was stellar, carding a 34 with crucial birdies that propelled him to victory. While his Saturday back nine of 32 included an eagle and several birdies, it was his mental fortitude that truly fuelled his success.
"I always try to lean as much as I can on my mind," Scheffler stated, highlighting his mental game as his "greatest strength." This proved vital as he tightened his driving accuracy on the crucial back nine, hitting key fairways and ultimately pulling away from the chasing pack. Rahm faltered down the stretch, allowing Scheffler to secure the major championship by five strokes, finishing at 11-under 273.
This victory marks Scheffler's third major title in just 21 professional starts, adding to his impressive record in golf's biggest tournaments. Harris English, Bryson DeChambeau, and Davis Riley finished tied for second place, but Scheffler's unwavering focus and ability to perform under pressure ultimately earned him the prestigious Wanamaker Trophy. Reflecting on his hard-fought win, Scheffler acknowledged the mental battle, stating, "I felt like this was as hard as I battled for a tournament in my career."
