DP World Tour - Nedbank Golf Challenge

Max Homa produced an imperious display to win the Nedbank Golf Challenge in Sun City. A closing 66 saw Homa finish on 19 under, four clear of Nicolai Højgaard.

The American began the final round with a one-shot lead at Gary Player Country Club and was briefly caught by Thorbjørn Olesen despite making birdies on four of his first six holes.

However, no sooner had he been joined at the top of the leaderboard than World Number Eight Homa fired a sensational approach over the water to 18 feet at the ninth and converted the eagle opportunity.

The eagle added to gains at the second, third, fifth and sixth – as well as a bogey at the fourth – saw Homa match Olesen's front-nine 31 to lead by two on 18 under.

Olesen cranked up the pressure once more with a tap-in birdie on the tenth but, although Homa gave the chasing pack hope with a dropped shot on the 11th, the Dane carded consecutive bogeys at the 12th and 13th before a double-bogey at the 16th ended his challenge.

Homa birdied the 15th from seven feet and rattled in a 38-foot effort at the next to put the result beyond doubt.

“It's been a dream 10 or 11 days,” Homa said. “It was a crazy day – I got off to such a great start and Thorbjørn was playing unbelievable. He kept pushing us along and Nicolai was playing phenomenal golf so it was fun.

“Its kind of what you dream of, you want to be in the fight and it was fun to close it out at the end.”

PGA Tour - Butterfield Bermuda Championship

Camilo Villegas ended a long and emotional drought when he came up with key birdies down the stretch Sunday for a 6-under 65 to win the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, his first victory since losing his 22-month-old daughter to cancer in 2020.

Villegas went shot for shot with Alex Noren for five hours until all he had left was a tap-in for par for his first PGA TOUR title since 2014.

He stood erect, lightly pumping his fist, and then looked skyward before players rushed onto the green to celebrate. Villegas grabbed one bottle of bubbly and took a swing.

More than going nine years without winning, Villegas and his wife coped with the death of Mia, who died of brain cancer in the summer of 2020. Villegas was lost on the course and finished last year at No. 654 in the world.

Now he has a two-year exemption and returns to the Masters and PGA Championship for the first time since 2015. His wife began a foundation in Mia’s name, and their son, Mateo, was born in December.

“It’s tough to put into words right now,” Villegas said. “Wow, what a ride, man. I love this game. This game has given me so many great things, and in the process, it kicks your butt. Life has given me so many great things and in the process it kicks your butt, too.”

Japan Golf Tour - Mitsui Sumitomo VISA Taiheiyo Masters

Imahira outplays Yoshida to win Mitsui Sumitomo Visa Taiheiyo Masters. Shugo Imahira held off Taiki Yoshida to win his second JGTO title of the season with a one-shot victory at the Mitsui Sumitomo Visa Taiheiyo Masters on Sunday.

The 31-year-old, who held a two-shot lead overnight, carded an even-par 70 for a 12-under-par total of 268 on the Gotemba Course at the Taiheiyo Club, narrowly edging Yoshida, who shot a 69. Commencing the day with a two-shot advantage, Imahira made a promising start by birdieing the third and seventh holes, extending his lead to four shots over Yoshida.

However, little did Imahira anticipate that these two birdies would be his only ones for the day. He had to navigate through bogeys on the ninth and 17th holes, ultimately paring the last to secure the ninth win of his career.

Yoshida, Imahira's closest pursuer, kept the fans on the edge of their seats as he gradually narrowed the latter's lead to just one shot after birdieing the 17th. However, Yoshida could only manage a par on the last hole, failing to force a playoff.

Imahira mentioned that the victory has brought him a great sense of fulfillment, making up for the disappointment at the ACN Championship in August. He led during the penultimate stage but eventually settled for a solo fourth.

"After experiencing regret at ACN, I feel like I've been able to overcome that, so there's a sense of satisfaction," said Imahira.

"Even with a gap, birdies and bogeys can quickly change the situation by two shots, so I thought the gap wasn't a big deal. I was playing to widen the gap, but it ended a bit nervously. "Looking back, during that moment from the 13th hole, there were thoughts like if I had played differently on certain holes, maybe things would have been different.

"This week, regardless of what happened, I wanted to accept it, and as a result, I managed to avoid major mistakes."

Asian Tour - Hong Kong Open

New Zealand’s Ben Campbell drained a 15-foot birdie putt on the famous par-four 18th hole to win the US$2 million Hong Kong Open today after gripping battle over the closing stages with playing-partners Cam Smith from Australia and Thailand’s Phachara Khongwatmai.

Campbell, who had not led at any stage of the tournament until that brilliant last putt, shot a four-under-par 66 to finish on 19-under-par and beat Smith by one and Phacahara by two.

Smith returned a 68 and Phachara a 69 here at the Hong Kong Golf Club, while Canadian Richard T. Lee came in with a 64 to tie for third.

All three players, playing in the final pairing, were tied playing the last with the chance of a sudden-death play-off very high.

However, Campbell won it in normal time after Smith had to lay up with his second shot and nearly holed his third before making a four, while Phachara missed his birdie putt from 25-feet and three putted after missing a three footer.

For Campbell, who also birdied the 17th, this is his maiden win on the Asian Tour, with his only other win in the professional game coming at the New Zealand PGA Championship in 2018.

“It’s good to finally get the monkey off the back and yeah, sort of just battling away all day,” said Campbell.

Asian Development Tour - PKNS Selangor Masters

Ho Yu-Cheng of Chinese Taipei survived a nervy closing round to bag his maiden Asian Development Tour (ADT) at the PKNS Selangor Masters.

Taking a four-shot lead over Japan’s Naoki Sekito into the final round at Seri Selangor Golf Club, Ho bogeyed his first two holes and spent the rest of the day in survival mode. With none of the other contenders managing to post a low score, Ho’s closing 76 for an even-par 280 total (68-70-66-76) was good enough for a one-shot victory in the USD175,000 tournament, which is co-sanctioned with the domestic Toyota Tour.

Thai rookie Runchanapong Youprayong closed with a best-of-the-day 67 to share runner-up honours on one-over-par 281 (70-71-73-67) with ADT Order of Merit leader Deyen Lawson of Australia (73-68-71-69).

Ho had come close to breaking through for his first ADT title at the BNI Ciputra Golfpreneur Tournament in Indonesia in August, where he went into the final round with a two-stroke lead but wound up settling for runner-up honours. The 25-year-old voiced his relief at getting it done this time around and paid tribute to his caddie, experienced Singaporean looper Mohd Ibrahim, for keeping him calm and focused during a testing final day.

“It feels good to win my first ADT title, especially since I’m the only Taiwanese in the tournament. It’s a big step for me.

PGA Tour of Australasia - Gippsland Super 6

Twenty-four hours after his place in the tournament was in jeopardy, New Zealand’s Kerry Mountcastle broke through for his first win on the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia at the 2023 Gippsland Super 6 at Warragul Country Club.

It has been a strong debut Tour season so far for the Kiwi, with top-10s at the PNG Open (T10), and the WA Open (T4), but this victory takes his professional career to new heights.

As well as securing Mountcastle a spot in both the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship and the ISPS HANDA Australian Open in the coming weeks, he has now taken over No.1 spot in this season’s Order of Merit standings.

But there was a chance on Saturday that he would not even make it through to the final day with the former New Zealand amateur representative having to survive a 10-man playoff to reach the last 24 who contested the sudden-death medal match-play rounds.

He finished the 54 holes of strokeplay in a tie for 17th at 6-under-par, and then had to get through five opponents on Sunday (a total of 30 holes) on his way to the trophy. Jye Pickin, Lawry Flynn, Michael Wright, and Jak Carter were Mountcastle’s final-day victims before he faced the formidable Jake McLeod in the final.

“I only just snuck in today through the playoff yesterday, so I kind of came into today just trying to finish as high as I could for the Order of Merit… and all of a sudden I was in the final,” he laughed.

Big Easy Tour - Altron Big Easy Tour 5

Travis Ladner claimed a dramatic come-from-behind victory on the Altron Big Easy Tour after he shot a final-round 68 to total 12-under-par 204 and defeat close friend, Stals Swart, by two shots at Akasia Golf Club on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old Ladner had posted similar scores in the first and second rounds of this 54-hole event and was just a shot behind overnight leader, Marthin Scheepers, going into the final round.

“It was a crazy finish out there,” said Ladner after he birdied the last for a two-stroke victory. “It hasn’t really sunk in. I’m obviously gutted for Stals, one of my best mates. It sucks to see him finish like that but I’m chuffed with how I played this week and I’m happy to finally get it done.”

He started the final round with a birdie on the first hole but immediately gave that shot away on the second. He steadied himself and made back-to-back pars before another birdie – this time on the par-five fifth. Ladner made further gains on the seventh and eighth, birdieing both those holes. But that joy was short-lived, too, as yet another bogey visited his card.

After the turn, Ladner, who plays out of Eagle Canyon Golf Estate, gave nothing away; making seven pars and a pair of birdies to seal his first title on any Sunshine Tour-sanctioned event.
