PGA Tour - Genesis Invitational

Hideki Matsuyama set the Riviera record for the lowest closing round by a winner Sunday in The Genesis Invitational, giving the Japanese star another record that means far more to him.

Matsuyama rallied from a six-shot deficit with a 9-under 62 at The Riviera Country Club, punctuated by consecutive shots inside a foot, to win for the ninth time on the PGA TOUR. That breaks the record for Asian-born players he shared with K.J. Choi of South Korea. Matsuyama finished at 17-under 267 for a three-shot victory over Will Zalatoris (69) and Luke List (68).

"I'm trying to think if that was the most impressive round I've ever seen in person," said J.T. Poston, Matsuyama's playing partner on Sunday. "It's definitely the best I've ever seen on TOUR. He had like four birdie putts that were like this -- " (Poston put his two index fingers 6 inches apart). "He hit a couple bad drives, but then recovered nicely and never even really had that long of a par putt. It was impressive."

It was Matsuyama’s first victory since his playoff win at the Sony Open two years ago, after which Shigeki Maruyama sent him a text to remind him of a conversation they once had about becoming the most prolific PGA TOUR winner of Asian players.

Asian Tour - IRS Prima Malaysian Open

David Puig’s stock went up once again today after he claimed the US$1 million IRS Prima Malaysian Open – for his second victory on the Asian Tour in four months. Big things are expected of the young Spaniard who plays on the LIV Golf League, and he showed why by firing his second successive nine-under-par 62 for a spectacular tournament total of 23-under and a two-shot win.

On a day of incredibly low scoring at The Mines Resort and Golf Club, in the first event of the season on the Asian Tour, Korean Jeunghun Wang returned a 61 to finish second, while Thailand’s Denwit Boriboonsub came in with the same score to tie for third with John Catlin from the United States, who shot a 66.

As preferred lies were played no records were officially set, including Denwit’s back nine of eight-under-par 28 which matched the Asian Tour record. As the event is part of The Open Qualifying Series, Puig, Wang and Denwit have all made it through to The Open at Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland, from July 18-21. Only the leading three go through with Catlin denied a place as Denwit’s world ranking is higher.

Sunshine Tour,Challenge Tour - Dimension Data Pro-Am

David Ravetto clinched his maiden Challenge Tour title with a two-stroke victory at the Dimension Data Pro-Am. The Frenchman took a two-shot lead into the final round at Fancourt Golf Estate and he never looked like being caught as he posted a three under par round of 69 to reach 15 under par, two ahead of England’s Sam Hutsby who finished second.

The 26-year-old opened with a birdie at the first hole to settle the nerves before further gains at the third and ninth holes put further breathing space between himself and the chasing pack. Ravetto carded a level par back nine to see out victory and move to third place on the Road to Mallorca Rankings.

“It feels amazing,” he said. “I’m so proud of myself because the last six months haven’t been easy for me and I’m so happy with my performance this week.

“I had a discussion with my mental coach and the plan for me was to just hit as many good shots as I could and take each hole at a time. Today I tried to be conservative and take my birdie chances when they arrived. Overall I played some solid golf. Ravetto, who retained his DP World Tour playing privileges at Qualifying School at the end of last year, was delighted to triumph in George and heads into next week’s Magical Kenya Open full of confidence.

Spaniard Victor Pastor and South African duo Robin Williams and Hennie du Plessis shared third place on 11 under par, while three-time DP World Tour winner Brandon Stone and fellow South African Zander Lombard finished sixth on ten under.

Professional Golf Tour of India - Tata Steel PGTI Players Championship 2024 presented by Tollygunge Club

Gurugram’s Manu Gandas (65-67-64-64) stole the show in the last round by shooting the day’s best score of six-under 64 to total an impressive 20-under 260 and lift his eighth career title at the INR 1 crore TATA Steel PGTI Players Championship 2024 presented by Tollygunge Club.

Rahil Gangjee (65-65-64-68), playing in his original home town of Kolkata, put together a fourth round of 68 to secure the runner-up spot at 18-under 262.

Twenty-seven-year-old Manu Gandas, who had earned a spot on the DP World Tour in 2023 after winning the TATA Steel PGTI Ranking in 2022, drew on all his learnings from playing in Europe last year. Manu’s second straight 64 was a bogey-free effort that was punctuated by three birdies each on the front-nine and back-nine.

Gandas, trailing overnight leader Rahil Gangjee by two shots at the start of the day, started piling on the pressure on the latter with some great wedge shots that led to birdies on the fourth and seventh and a 40-feet birdie conversion on the sixth. Manu continued to fire with his short-game on the back-nine making two critical birdie putts from a range of 10 to 15 feet on the 13th and 17th to finally move into the lead and thereafter seal the match.

Manu said, “I wasn’t thinking any differently today and just stuck to my gameplan and continued doing what I did well earlier in the week. The first round was my best in terms of ball-striking. But on the next two days, the irons were not up to the mark. However, I managed to salvage those rounds thanks to my short-game. The long birdie putt on the 17th today was crucial as it gave me a two-shot cushion going into the last hole.
