DP World Tour & Japan Golf Tour - ISPS HANDA - CHAMPIONSHIP

Australia’s Lucas Herbert became the inaugural winner of the ISPS HANDA Championship when he sank a 12-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to beat Canada’s Aaron Cockerill on Sunday. With this tournament being the first-ever to be jointly sanctioned by the JGTO and DP World Tour, the 27-year-old Australian bagged not only his third DP World Tour title but also his maiden JGTO victory - making him the first foreign player to win on Tour this season. The ending for the tournament was certainly befitting given that Herbert is currently sponsored by the ISPS HANDA.

"It's great. Obviously coming on board as an ambassador for ISPS Handa this year, it's great to win an event with them as the title sponsor," said Herbert.

"It's a real honour. And just to be back in Japan and win as well. I've come here so many times and loved it so to get back here and win, it means a lot.

"I think it's cool to be able to win everywhere and have a lot of good memories from all the spots in the world where you have played."

As a JGTO event winner, Herbert earned himself a two-year exemption to compete in Japan's flagship circuit.

Sunshine Tour - The Tour Championship

Jaco Ahlers left the best for last, in all respects. In the final tournament of the Sunshine Tour season, Ahlers chipped in from the bunker for a birdie on the last to claim a four-shot victory in the Tour Championship at Serengeti Estates on Sunday.

Ahlers closed with a 71 and a total of 17 under par to claim his 11th victory on the Sunshine Tour.

“I didn’t expect that finish. I was actually just trying to keep it together there at the end. But what a way to finish. I couldn’t have asked for more,” said Ahlers after he was drenched in six bottles of champagne by a group of Serengeti fans with whom he has a special relationship.

“This one was always special. I have a big tie with Serengeti and the people here. My sponsor lives here and I have a lot of support here. This is like a second home for me. It’s a special win this one.”

Korn Ferry Tour - LECOM Suncoast Classic

Scott Gutschewski drained a 47-foot birdie putt from the fringe as he defeated 23-year-old Logan McAllister, a second-year Korn Ferry Tour member half his age, on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff and won the LECOM Suncoast Classic. At 46 years, 6 months, and 22 days of age, Gutschewski became the 10th-oldest winner in Korn Ferry Tour history (established 1990), in addition to earning his third career Korn Ferry Tour victory.

Gutschewski’s last victory came at the UNC Health Championship presented by STITCH back on June 8, 2008. The native Nebraskan’s win Sunday marked the second-largest gap between victories in Korn Ferry Tour history at 14 years, 10 months, and 15 days. It was also the second time this season a Korn Ferry Tour winner went 10-plus years between victories, as Ben Kohles won the Astara Chile Classic earlier this month, nearly 11 years after he won the first two starts of his Korn Ferry Tour career back in 2012.

"It’s awesome, fun, it was a blast,” Gutschewski said. “Just putted out of my mind. Missed a short one on No. 8 today (for par) and yesterday, but other than that I pretty much made everything. I’ve been working hard on my putting. Didn’t keep my (PGA TOUR) card last year and looked at where I was at, and where I needed to improve. I need(ed) to improve my putting. And it’s been working a little bit this year. I’ve been feeling a little bit better. Doesn’t always show with the finishes, but it’s something you can feel and something you can build on.”

Nordic Golf League - Sand Valley Spring Series Final - by ECCO

As the final day progressed, it became increasingly clear that the Sand Valley Spring Series Final – by ECCO should find its winner among two players. Norwegian Andreas Halvorsen, who won the first of the three tournaments in Poland and Swedish Jesper Hagborg Asp, who went 11 under par in the second round and was a millimetre from a 59.

When the two combatants stood at the 15th tee, they were perfectly even. Asp was one under during the day, and Halvorsen two under. Both were then 13 under par together and a full six strokes better than the next on the leaderboard. But none of them could find the necessary and decisive birdie on the last four holes, so there had to be a replay.

The first two holes were halved, but when they reached par-3 hole 10, the tournament found its winner. Andreas Halvorsen holed his putt for the birdie, while Asps sneaked right around the hole. The Norwegian thus took his second victory in Poland and settled in second place on Road to Europe, still led by Charlie Lindh who lost the cut.

MENA Golf Tour - Malaysian Swing II, The Els Club, Desaru Coast

England’s William Harold takes out the top prize at The Els Club Desaru Coast.

William Harold held on during round 3 for a wire-to-wire victory at The MENA Tour’s Malaysian Swing Event 2 at the wonderful Valley Course at The Els Club Desaru Coast.

With a stunning opening round of 64 (-8), he followed it up with scores of 69 (-3), and 73 (+1) to close out for a total of 10 under par 206 total. He was super excited with the win & to be back playing on The MENA Tour having not played on the Tour since 2020.

“It’s great to get that winning feeling back” claimed Harold. “I wasn’t sure I’d get it done, but I just kept my focus on hitting fairways & greens to grind out a score. My swing was getting away from me over the past 2 days, but I managed to hang on. I have been delighted with my performance over the past 2 weeks in Malaysia and it’s given me a boost of confidence heading into the coming months. My sincere thanks to the team & all the sponsors of The MENA Tour Malaysian Swing as I know that without them, these events do not happen. I look forward to returning to Malaysia again soon as I have definitely enjoyed our time here.”

It was a great week for Malaysian players with 16 Malaysians making the cut after 2 rounds. Impressive play from Malaysian players Erwin Chang, Paul San & Galven Kendall Green had them finish 2nd, 3rd & 4th respectively.

More than 100 players from 27 nationalities played in this week’s event. The MENA Tour now moves to Hua Hin in Thailand for a 3rd event in as many weeks. The Royal Hua Hin Thailand Championship by MENA Tour 2023 will take place from April 25th – 27th.

Alps Tour Golf - Alps de Las Castillas

Kiet Van der Weele captures his first professional win at the 2023 Alps de Las Castillas by 3 strokes. He shot a final round of 7 under-par, 65 that included 7 birdies in a row on the front nine holes and 1 birdie and 1 bogey on the back nine for a three-day total at 22 under-par. He turned professional in September 2022. After his win, Van der Weele commented on how “today went really well. The 7 birdies on the front nine really helped me get the round going. I felt really good and the birdies I made weren’t big putts but put me in a good mood and allowed me to play more freely. I haven’t had the opportunity to play many events as a professional having turned pro just last year but capturing my first win so early now it feels really satisfying and I’m sure it’ll benefit me later on. I did it as a team with my coaches, my management so this is definitely a team effort.”

Jacobo Pastor from Spain concluded his tournament in 2nd place with a three-day score of 19 under par. He shot a final round of 7 under-par, 65 with 8 birdies and 1 bogey. After the round, Pastor commented on his performance this week: “It’s sad to end another round with a bogey. I played well though overall. On the 12th hole, I hit a great shot with my 3 wood to a few meters and it was the right moment to put pressure on my fellow competitors and try to reach -21/22 under. I made birdie on the 15th hole and then on the 16th hole I missed a short putt to reach 21 under par. On the 17th hole, I hit a really bad shot and on the 18th hole, I made a few mistakes and deserved to make a bogey. It was a nice tournament overall and I’m happy with my result. Ending the tournament in 2nd place is always nice especially considering I wasn’t very comfortable with my long game the first few days. I’m looking forward to the next events.”
