PGA Tour - Valero Texas Open
Brian Harman weathered challenging windy and cold conditions at the Valero Texas Open to secure his first PGA TOUR title since his major victory at The 2023 Open Championship. The American closed with a 3-over par 75 on Sunday for a three-shot win.
Harman began the final round with a three-stroke advantage, but faced a strong challenge from Andrew Novak, who was seeking his maiden PGA TOUR win and a coveted spot in the Masters. Despite his lead being cut to just one after a double bogey on the ninth hole, Harman held firm. Crucial birdies on the 12th and 14th holes provided breathing room, and although he carded two late bogeys, Novak's errors down the stretch ultimately secured the victory for Harman.
Ryan Gerard finished as the runner-up after a final round of 69, one of only seven sub-par rounds on a difficult scoring day at TPC San Antonio. Novak's bogey-bogey finish resulted in a tie for third place alongside Maverick McNealy.
Harman acknowledged the tough conditions, stating, "Just so proud of how I handled these conditions. This golf course gave me all I wanted today and happy to come out on top." He also revealed he was playing with a heavy heart, thinking of a family friend who recently assisted in rescuing his son.
Adding to the challenging day, four players, including Englishman Tommy Fleetwood, carded scores in the 80s, and the average score for the round was nearly 75. Patrick Fishburn provided a highlight with an incredible 106-foot eagle putt on the 17th, the longest on the PGA TOUR since 2008.
This victory marks a significant return to form for Harman, who had been struggling since his Open triumph at Hoylake. He now heads to the Masters with renewed confidence following this hard-fought win. Moving back inside the Top 25 of the Official World Golf Ranking.
