PGA Tour - ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP

Winning the ZOZO Championship in Japan was special for American Collin Morikawa, whose great-grandparents emigrated from the country. But more important was a victory anywhere after a 27-month winless drought on the PGA TOUR. He broke through Sunday with a 7-under 63 for a six-shot victory to win the ZOZO at the Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club just outside Tokyo.

“It feels so good, I can't even explain it,” Morikawa said. “I knew I was going to get here at some point. It's like getting your first win, your first major.”

He said he realized that people were asking questions why he had not won. He said the victory was extra special since his wife Katherine Zhu was in the gallery and kissed him when he came off No. 18.

“I had to really look back and ask myself what's wrong,” he said. “What's the reasoning behind finishing second — that versus a win. This win means the world. Being in Japan and being half Japanese. A lot has come through over the past week.”

DP World Tour - Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters

A pair of eagles helped Adrian Meronk to a tournament-winning 66 at the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters. The Pole, who narrowly missed out on a place in Europe’s triumphant Ryder Cup squad, finished 16 under par to win by one stroke from Germany's Matti Schmid at Real Club de Golf Sotogrande in San Roque.

Richard Mansell was a shot further back in third after a tense final round played in changeable weather conditions and brought forward to earlier in the day due to the threat of storms. Asked for his feelings afterwards, Meronk said: “Relieved, to be honest. “It was a tough tournament, tough weather, didn’t have my best golf on the first day so to win the tournament is very special. I’m over the moon.”

Meronk was two over for the first three holes but responded in style with an eagle at the sixth and holed out from 120 yards for another at the ninth to go out in 34. A 42-foot birdie putt at the tenth took him within one of the leads held by Schmid and another long eagle attempt at the 12th went close to set up a tap-in birdie. The German dropped a shot at the 13th but responded by matching Meronk’s birdie at the next to keep his nose in front. The Pole’s nerveless birdie at the 17th put the pressure on Schmid, who missed his par putt back on 16 as the lead swung to Meronk.

Sunshine Tour - VOG KZN

Pieter Moolman’s strategy on the final day of the Vodacom Origins of Golf KwaZulu-Natal event at the Wild Coast Sun Country Club on Sunday was to try and create as many opportunities for himself to net birdies, and the Benoni Lake golfer succeeded admirably as he fired a sensational 64 to get into a playoff with Ethan Smith, which Moolman won.

The 32-year-old Moolman began the final round six shots behind on four-over-par, following a 68 in the weather-delayed second round. He was so far behind Hennie O’Kennedy on two-under that he began his last round on the 10th hole, and a wonderful start saw him birdie four of the five holes from the 11th.

He went out in a stunning 31 strokes, and although Moolman’s back nine (from the first) featured a couple of bogeys, at the first and eighth holes, he still collected four birdies to come home in two-under, his 64 being the low round of the tournament.

Smith, meanwhile, also made a brilliant start with three birdies from the first hole, quickly overhauling O’Kennedy, who had been one stroke ahead of him. The 25-year-old from Paarl bogeyed the 18th hole however, forcing him into the playoff.

Moolman added to his birdie count in the sudden-death decider as he made a three on the 305m par-four first hole, while Smith could only make par.

“I’ve been hitting the ball well enough all week to have better scores, and it finally came with a 31 on my front nine,” Moolman said after his second Sunshine Tour win. “I just tried to give myself chances and capitalise on them as much as possible.

PGA Tour of Australasia - Webex Players Series SA hosted by Greg Blewett

Even though he expects to win every golf tournament he enters, Austin Bautista was shocked when he came from behind in the final round today to clinch the inaugural Webex Players Series South Australia hosted by Greg Blewett. A sensational closing nine of 6-under-par 29 at Willunga Golf Course, plus some late missteps among the other chief contenders trying to seal their biggest career win, saw Sydney’s Bautista emerge as a one-shot victor at 11-under, his second Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia title.

The 26-year-old’s 64 with eight birdies matched the low round of the day and followed opening rounds of 65-71-68. Overnight leader Andrew Campbell (NSW), Josh Greer (WA) and Corey Lamb (NSW) shared second position and will have plenty of “what-if” stories.

A self-confessed “bad swing” from Campbell on the par-3 14th saw his ball cannon into the trees and out of bounds into a neighbouring McLaren Vale vineyard leading to a double-bogey, dropping him from the lead.

Greer was steady for much of the afternoon in just his third event as a professional but couldn’t birdie the last hole after managing a three on each of the first three days, while Lamb suffered a cruel end on the 18th, making a bogey from 50m short of the green with his tee shot when a par would have forced a playoff.

Meanwhile, Bautista was “having a back nine”, fist-pumping his way to four birdies in the last six holes, not knowing where he stood on the leaderboard until he finished.

“Golf is just wild. I’ve missed so many cuts I’ve thought about quitting,” Bautista, who failed by a shot to play the last 36 holes in the Tour’s two WA events this month, said.

“I’ve always been confident in my game and I think I can win every week. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t. If I make putts and get on roll, it just feels like a video game.”

Gira de Golf Professional Mexicana - E3 - Copa SIMSA Patrocinada por Combugas

The first one arrived. After several attempts to win the Mexican Professional Golf Tour (GGPM), Álvaro Ortiz from Jalisco wins the SIMSA Cup presented by Combugas, stage 3 of the 2023-24 season of the only paid circuit in our country endorsed by the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR).

In a confrontation between friends and professional colleagues, the native of Guadalajara, Álvaro Ortiz debuted as GGPM champion by accumulating a score of 194 strokes, 19 under par, three shots ahead of fellow national Roberto Lebrija and five over Sebastián Vazquez.

“It's already tied, it's going to be a great close,” exclaimed a spectator after Ortiz made a seven-yard downhill putt for birdie on the par-3 15th hole, which tied Lebrija at -18. Another birdie from Guadalajara on 16 gave him the definitive advantage. To conclude the round, Lebrija hit the water in the 18th, thus sentencing the victory for Ortiz, champion of the Mexican Golf Open in 2021.

“I feel very happy, the truth is that I had a thorn in my side for not being able to win on this tour, I had been trying to win for some years and had not been able to. It was a great closing of the tournament since I was able to turn the score around, even so I must recognize the great work of Roberto who played very well,” commented Álvaro Ortiz, winner of a check for 300 thousand pesos.

Nordic Golf League - Road to Europe Final

We gave it an honest try. We tried to run a fair final round on Møn in the Danish autumn storm, but ultimately, we had to stretch rifle and cancel the final round. Rolled over trees, very strong winds and balls moving on greens made it impossible after a few hours of play to complete the final round of the Road to Europe Final at Møns Golf Resort.

Therefore, the organizers had to make the difficult decision on Friday morning to cancel the final round, where tradition is a lot of excitement, not just about the victory in the tournament, but also about who runs with the five cards for next year's Challenge Tour.

Thus, also this year, where more players, incl. Mon's own Alexander Frances, with a victory in the final, was able to secure a promotion for the Challenge Tour. Before the final round, Frances was in a split ninth place, four strokes after the leaders, and with stormy lurking, everything could happen in the third and final round.

So, it ended with a cancellation, which meant that it was the result after 36 holes that stood. At the top, that meant that the final was to be decided in a replay between the two leaders, Danish Sebastian Wiis and Swedish Adam Andersson, who both had one win earlier in the season. Both were seven strokes under pairs after the second round, so they had to decide the final in replay. They divided the first three replay holes into par, birdie, and par, and ultimately Swedish Adam Andersson won with a par on the fourth replay hole.

It gave the Swede his second victory of the season. He also won on Great Northern, so he finished at number nine on the Road to Europe rankings.

Unfortunately for him Yushi managed to put together a good closing finishing round of the tournament with a 4 under round.

Alps Tour Golf - Alps Tour Grand Final Presented by Auralis Limitless Lighting

Augustin Holé from France wins the 2023 Alps Tour Grand Final Presented by AURALIS Limitless Lighting after an incredible birdie putt from about 18 meters on the 1st playoff hole against Spain’s Quim Vidal. He earned 9,500 Order of Merit points and the winner’s check of €10,000.  He followed his opening round of 9 under-par, with a 4 under-par and a 3 over-par to end the tournament at 10 under-par. After his victory, he was very emotional:

“I couldn’t have wished for anything better than this. I fought hard today and throughout the entire event. I was looking for this victory for over a year. It’s been a goal of mine to win an Alps Tour event for over a year and to be able to do it today, I’m speechless. I lost my dad a couple of years back, and this one is definitely for him and for my family around me. I’m so grateful to have the people that I have around me, my staff, my friends so this one is for them and for myself. I give all of them credit but also myself. I now have Stage 2 of Q-School and hopefully, I will be able to repeat the same thing there but we will see how it goes. Now I will enjoy it and take a few days off.”
