Asian Tour – Mercuries Taiwan Masters

South African Jaco Ahlers triumphed in the 37th edition of the Mercuries Taiwan Masters today, finally clinching his first title on the Asian Tour, after patiently winning a war of attrition at Taiwan Golf and Country Club – which has proven to be one of the toughest golf courses this season, with brutal rough and tapering fairways.

Ahlers is a prolific winner of titles on the Sunshine Tour on home soil, with 11, including their Tour Championship in April, and finally got off the mark in Asia following a two-shot victory over India’s Chikkarangappa S. – in the US$1million event, which is Chinese-Taipei’s richest tournament.

A player who says he enjoys more demanding courses, he proved that with a closing three-under-par 69 to finish on four-under – the highest winning score of year – while Chikkarangappa, the joint overnight leader with Korean Taehee Lee, carded a 74.

“It was tough,” said 40-year-old Ahlers, who becomes the first player from his country to win the event. “It was a grind but very glad to be standing here with the trophy. This means a lot to me. I am feeling comfortable here now. I said to a friend of mine last week I feel like I can win on this Tour. So, there we go. I just tried to keep it in play and make a few birdies, missed a few as well.”

Japan Golf Tour – Vantelin Tokai Classic

Yuta Kinoshita secured his first JGTO win in five years after firing a flawless four-under-par 67 in the final round of the Vantelin Tokai Classic in Aichi on Sunday. Starting play tied for the lead with Takumi Kanaya at the Miyoshi Country Club, the 37-year-old journeyman delivered a steady performance to prevail in a thrilling battle against Rikuya Hoshino and Kanaya.

Having secured three birdies over 16 holes, Yuta contended in a tight race with the two younger and more illustrious stalwarts, but it was his fourth birdie on the par-four 17th that clinched his victory with a total of 15-under-par 269. Vantelin-sponsored star Hoshino could only par the remaining two holes to close with a 67 and finish alone in second place, one shot ahead of third-placed Kanaya (69), whose bid was thwarted following a costly bogey on the penultimate hole. Kodai Ichihara (66) and Ryosuke Kinoshita (68) shared the fourth spot 272.

Yuta's last triumph had come at the Mynavi ABC Championship in 2018, where he edged Masahiro Kawamura through a playoff. "I'm so filled with relief and joy that it's hard to put into words," he said, his voice choked with emotion. Even though both of them (Hoshino and Kanay) are much younger and likely more skilled than me, I did my best to keep up. Deep down, I never doubted that I could upstage them."

Professional Golf Tour of India – Bollineni Panache & Telangana Tourism presents Telangana Golconda Masters

Patna-based professional Aman Raj carded an excellent seven-under 63 to storm into the third-round lead at a total of 16-under 194 at the Bollineni Panache & Telangana Tourism present Telangana Golconda Masters 2023 being played at the Hyderabad Golf Association (HGA).

Aman (66-65-63), a winner on the PGTI this season, jumped four spots from his overnight fifth place as a result of his flawless 63 on Friday. Delhi’s Sachin Baisoya (66-61-68) and Chandigarh’s Akshay Sharma (61-65-69) were a close tied second at 15-under 195 and also among the top contenders going into the last day.

Aman Raj, who was five shots off the lead at the start of the day, sank his first birdie of the day with a 12-feet conversion on the fourth after which there was no looking back for him. The 28-year-old, a two-time winner on the PGTI, then drained an eagle from 50 feet on the sixth, knocked in a 15-footer for birdie on the seventh and produced a spectacular chip-in for birdie on the eighth. Aman’s exceptional chipping and putting helped him add two more birdies on the back-nine.

Aman said, “I kept finding the fairways and greens today and was actually waiting for my first birdie which came on the fourth and gave me the much-needed momentum. My short-game stood out as I was quite confident about my chipping and putting and was therefore going for the pins.

“I’ve been mentally quite relaxed this season and have not been putting too much pressure on myself and that has reflected in my results. Come tomorrow, I just want to keep executing whatever I have planned and wait for the putts to fall in, once that happens, I can keep building on the momentum.”

Asian Development Tour – OB Golf Championship

Japan’s Naoki Sekito endured a nervy finish to win by two shots in the OB Golf Championship at Gunung Geulis today, maintaining his overnight lead and holding off a hard-charging Aaron Wilkin to secure victory with a final tournament score of 199.

“I can’t explain how happy I feel right now,” said Sekito after his round. “The last couple of holes I wasn’t that nervous, but my putting wasn’t good today. I knew some guy in front of me had finished at nine under, so I wanted to go with 11 under to the last hole because I knew that I was going to be so nervous for the last putt.”

Opening with a string of eight pars, Sekito (68) posted his first birdie on the ninth hole, just as Thailand’s Ekpharit Wu had drawn level and was threatening to edge in front.

Playing in the final group, both birdied the 10th but two holes later their fortunes diverged, with Sekito scoring birdie on the par five 12th. Wu could only make bogey, the first of five dropped shots he would face in the following four holes, which saw him drop to a share of fifth place in the US$75,000 Asian Development Tour event.

Sekito was also not without a closing stretch wobble on holes 14 and 15, making consecutive bogeys just as Australia’s Wilkin, winner of the BRG Open Golf Championship in Vietnam earlier this month, was posting the lowest score of the day with a flawless, seven-birdie 63.
