PGA Tour – Quicken Loans National
Justin Rose on Sunday recorded his first win since the US Open a year ago when highlighting his immense competitive spirit at Congressional.
The Englishman beat Shawn Stefani, of the United States, on the first extra hole at the Quicken Loans National after an excruciating day which featured so many players in contention.
Rose had only needed to par the last hole in regulation to secure his sixth PGA Tour title.
But in the event, he hit his second in the water from the trees and, when everything seemed lost, he holed a 15-footer for bogey to finish on 70 for a four-under total in a final round in which the famous Washington layout once again revealed its teeth.
When Stefani hit it into the hazard in the play-off, Rose needed only to hit the green and take two putts. He looked and sounded relieved that he had finally followed up his glory at Merion.
European Tour – BMW International
Fabrizio Zanotti became the first Paraguayan to win on The European Tour after he came out trumps following a four man play off at the BMW International Open at Golf Club Gut Lärchenhof near Cologne.
The 31 year old, who had to regain his card for this season, had to wait until the fifth play off hole to secure a memorable success after World Number Two Henrik Stenson sent his tee shot into the water.
When Stenson then pitched into the bunker the Swede's fate was all but sealed and he soon conceded to give Zanotti, who has been a runner up three times on The European Tour, his breakthrough success.
Rafa Cabrera-Bello and Gregory Havret had begun the four man play off, but both dropped out to pave the way for Zanotti to win, after he shot a final round 65 to catapult himself into contention.

Englishman Greg Owen proved that leading a golf tournament only matters after the last hole. The 43-year-old Owen posted a 5-under 67 Sunday and earned his first career win at the United Leasing Championship presented by PTI when, one-by-one, the remaining challengers all faltered down the treacherous stretch of closing holes at Victoria National Golf Club.
Owen bogeyed the closing hole and posted his 9-under-par total nearly an hour and a half before the final groups and then waited to see if anyone would better his score. Many tried but each failed to equal Owen’s 279.
Challenge Tour – Scottish Hydro Challenge hosted by Macdonald Hotels and Resorts
At the foot of the majestic Cairngorm Mountains, Andrew Johnston scaled new career heights as the Englishman stormed to an imperious three-shot victory to claim a maiden European Challenge Tour title at the Scottish Hydro Challenge hosted by Macdonald Hotels and Resorts.
The 25 year old was untouchable as he provided the performance of a true champion, carding a five under par 66 which included an eagle at the par four second hole to leave the rest of the field in his wake.
Johnston began the day with a two-shot lead at the picturesque Macdonald Spey Valley Golf Club and, having started with a steady par, he holed out with a 58 degree wedge from 83 yards at the par four second hole, admitting that he then began to feel it was his day.
Johnston’s playing partner Moritz Lampert did stage an almighty comeback on the back nine to finish in a share of second place alongside Australian Terry Pilkadaris, having at one point fallen nine shots off the lead. But seven birdies on the way home was not enough to even get as Johnston, affectionately known on tour as ‘beef’, continued to pepper the pins.
Sunshine Tour – Vodacom Origins of Golf presented by Samsung
“I’m happy with every part of my game and I want to win 10 more this year,” said Danie van Tonder at Euphoria Golf Estate on Friday after he won for the second time in five starts.
That line was the beauty of the 23-year-old’s game summed up in a sentence, because his limitless optimism is matched by his ability to succeed, which he displayed this week with a solid victory at the first tournament of the Vodacom Origins of Golf presented by Samsung.
On Friday he clinched victory with a 33-stroke back nine and a 12-under-par total for the week. It was a hard-fought win for the Ebotse local, who had to fend off the charges Tyrone Ferreira, Ulrich van den Berg and Adilson da Silva during the final round.
The setup on day three at the Annika Sorenstam-designed Euphoria course was tough, but in the middle of his round Ferreira managed six birdies in a row from the seventh to the 12th and snatched the lead.
Van Tonder would not be outdone so late in the tournament and began to look for scoring opportunities, which he found and converted into birdies at the 12th, 13th and 15th. With that Ferreira’s charge was over and Van Tonder had secured his second win.
