In the second event of the 2001 European Tour season, Jose Maria Olazabal made a welcome return to the World Top-50 after producing as amazing finish to win the Omega Hong Kong Open at the Hong Kong Golf Club. Olazabal finished with three straight birdies to hold off strong challenges from two of the European Tour's young stars - Australia's Adam Scott and Norway's Henrik Bjornstad. Olazabal moves up 11 places from No.58 to No.47 in the World Ranking and up to 2nd place behind Jarmo Sandelin in the 2002 Volvo Order of Merit. Courtesy of his 3rd place finish in Hong Kong and a subsequent move to No.49 in the World, Adam Scott has secured an invitation to the 2002 Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia. The Australian has displaced the big-hitting American John Daly whose recent decision to withdraw from the Omega Hong Kong Open means that he has lost his place among the Worlds Top-50 golfers and has missed his chance to compete in the 2002 Masters tournament. With only the Vodacom Players Championship in South Africa left on the World Ranking Calendar, Scott cannot be overtaken and Daly cannot return to the Top-50 fold. The Final Ranking of 2001 will be issued next week and, if not otherwise exempt, all the Top-50 will receive invitations to compete in the 2002 Masters Tournament. In the final event of the 2001 Japanese golf calendar, Katsumasa Miyamoto ended the season in style as he moved into the World Top-100 after winning the Golf Nippon Series JT Cup at the Tokyo Nomiuri Country Club. Katsumasa finished just the one shot ahead of Tsuneyuki Nakajima and Toshimitsu Izawa and Toshi now moves up to No.19 in the World.
