PGA Championship

Justin Thomas won his first Major as a closing 68 handed him a two-shot victory at the US PGA Championship at Quail Hollow moving to World No.6.

The final round of the year's final Major did not catch fire until the back nine but an almighty battle took place over the closing stages and Thomas held his nerve to get to eight under and prevail over European Tour Members Francesco Molinari, Louis Oosthuizen and Patrick Reed.

For Italian Molinari and American Reed it was their best finish in a Major Championship, while Oosthuizen made it four runners-up finishes to go with his Open Championship triumph in 2010.

Rickie Fowler and Hideki Matsuyama were then at five under, a shot clear of Kevin Kisner - who had held at least a share of the lead after the first three days - and Graham DeLaet.

Thomas now adds the Wanamaker Trophy to his ever-growing collection as he enjoys a stunning 2017 campaign.

The victory is his third of the year and fourth of the PGA Tour season, a season that has seen him record a 59 at the Sony Open in Hawaii and a 63 at the US Open, which at nine under broke the record to par at that event.

"I know that a Major champion will never be taken away from after my name," he said. "Hopefully I'm going to win some more, plenty more, a lot more, whatever.

"I know you can't get to two unless you get one so I'm excited to have this and it's incredible. It was an awesome day. It was a great experience. It's huge for me.

Sunshine Tour – Sun Carnival City Challenge

Jbe’ Kruger hit a nine-iron approach shot on 18 from 162 meters to within two feet of the flag to make birdie and win the Sun Carnival City Challenge by a single shot at Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate on Friday.

It looked like the tournament would be decided through a play-off when Kruger – who was level with Neil Schietekat and JJ Senekal on 10-under – made par on 17. However, after placing his tee shot in the middle of the fairway on 18, he fired in his nine-iron to within close range and needed a simple tap-in to claim victory on his home course.

In a final round where things became tight very early on at the top, and where only one shot separated the leader from the chasing top 10 players, Kruger shot two-under-par 70 to total 11-under-par 205 to win his fourth Sunshine Tour event. The win is also his maiden victory on home soil as he won all three previous titles outside South Africa.

“On the last hole, I knew I had to make the birdie,” he said of that approach shot on 18, “I hit my best shot of the day, it came out perfectly. The wind just drifted it back a little bit. I had a look at that flag yesterday and I saw it was on a downslope, so you have to almost try and pitch it long.”

He had to hold his composure because, on 10-under par, Schietekat and Senekal were poised to accompany him to the play-off hole if he had dropped that shot. “I knew I could always win,” said Kruger, “I mean I know this course backwards.” It had been three years since Kruger won a Sunshine Tour event when he clinched the Golden Pilsner Zimbabwe Open in 2014, but a series of strong performances have delivered him a win on his home course, in his home country.

For the second consecutive year, Canada’s flag was raised during the trophy ceremony in Springfield, Missouri. Following in Mackenzie Hughes’ footsteps, the 29-year-old from Thornhill, Ontario, hoisted the trophy and collected a check worth $121,500 on the 18th green at Highland Springs Country Club. The first-place prize moved Silverman from No. 63 to No. 16 on the money list and secured his TOUR card for the 2017-18 season.

“It’s amazing,” said Silverman, who will be joining Hughes on TOUR in the fall. “Since I was 16 years old, I have wanted to be a professional golfer. I also made a goal that I wanted to be on the PGA TOUR before my 30th (birthday) and I’m 29. I’m hitting my goals and I’m excited.”

The Frenchman – whose mother hails from Dublin, further endearing him to the crowds – now moves up to eighth place in the Road to Oman Rankings and he was delighted to have made this breakthrough just a year after he turned professional.

“The format is great. Six holes, you have to be really in it from the very beginning, you don’t have a chance to make any mistakes, and it’s great to change the format from what we usually play and I really enjoyed it.

Pro Golf Tour – Gut Bissenmoor Classic

Marco Iten from Switzerland won the Gut Bissenmoor Classic 2017. With a total 7 under par (67, 71, 68) he secures himself his second trophy this season.

"I hit many greens in regulation and made the birdies whereever possible", Iten said about his third round. "On the 16th hole I made a really nice birdie!" But even then he had not a thought on winning his second trophy of the 2017 season: "I thouth the others had gone to 8 or 9 under par so I did not expect to have a really good chance to win." But he finally did, succeeded with a total 7 under par (67, 71, 68) and was one shot ahead of runner-up Finn Fleer after 54 holes.

Having already won the Open Madaef in Morocco this season Marco Iten just needs one more victory now to promote directly to the Challenge Tour.
