European Tour – Italian Open

Francesco Molinari held his nerve in a final-day battle with Danny Willett to claim a historic victory at the Italian Open.

The home hero recorded a closing 65 to get to 22 under and beat Willett by one shot, becoming the first Italian to win his national Open twice since the event became part of the European Tour in 1972.

The 2006 champion also became the first Italian to win any European Tour event twice as he claimed his fourth win and his first since the 2012 Reale Seguros Open de España in 2012.

Followed by an enormous gallery, he turned in 31 and held a four-shot lead with six holes to play but Masters Tournament winner Willett is made of stern stuff and went birdie-eagle on the 13th and 14th to cut the gap to one.

Thompson started the day tied with Scott Stallings and posted a 23-under-par 261 total in four trips around Hillcrest Country Club, three strokes better than Argentina’s Miguel Angel Carballo.

Grayson Murray came from well back and carded a 7-under 64 to take solo third at 18-under-par 266. Andrew “Beef” Johnston finished solo fourth at 17-under-par.

“It’s a huge confidence boost, to know that you can do it on such a big stage on a big level,” said Thompson, who takes over the top spot on the Finals money list with his first-place prize of $180,000. “These four Web.com Tour Finals events mean a lot to all of us. We all want to get our card, especially the guys that lost it last year. I hope that this continues to breed confidence going forward. I feel good about my game.”

PGA Tour China - Pingan Bank Open

After a year of close calls, with runner-up finishes on PGA Tour LatinoAmerica and PGA Tour China, American Charlie Saxon held on to win the Ping An Bank Open by a shot over hard-luck runner-up Xinjun Zhang.

Saxon tied for second at the PGA TOUR Latinoamerica’s 85 Abierto OSDE de Centro in mid-April. He then began his PGA TOUR China career, a then-career best solo-second showing at the Yulongwan Yunnan Open. By playing a bogey-free round Saturday and playing his final 27 holes without a bogey, there wouldn’t be an almost-won this week for Saxon during overcast, rainy conditions at Topwin Golf and Country Club.

“This is by far the biggest win I’ve ever had,” said a smiling Saxon after the round. “I feel great. Whenever you have a chance to win and you’re able to capitalize on that and deal with the pressure and the nerves that go with that, it’s obviously very rewarding,.” Saxon moved to No. 2 on the Order of Merit with the win.

ALPS Tour Golf - Alps Costa del Sol

England’s Tom Shadbolt won his maiden title today. A 60 meter shot holed followed by a hole in one crucified his closest opponent Santiago Tarrio.

Shadbolt, 28, is among the very solid players on Alps Tour. His best result so far was a 2nd place in Italy in 2014 where he missed by nothing a win. He recorded two runner up places last season and had climbed twice on the third step of the podium in 2016.

But today, the golf saints were English and the player from London was as accurate as a sniper on back to back holes. He first holed a 60 meter shot for eagle on the 13th to go for -6 then he holed his 7 iron shot on the following par 3 for a hole in one and -8. He completed his round with an extra birdie on the 17th to win by a nice margin of three shots over Santigao Tarrio. Nicolas Tacher and David Borda are tie for third place.

MENA Golf Tour - Shaikh Maktoum Dubai Open

Andrew Marshall broke free from a late tie with fellow Englishman Adam Sagar with a birdie on the first playoff hole to win the Shaikh Maktoum Dubai Open for his second title on the MENA Golf Tour at Al Badia Golf Club on Wednesday.

Marshall conjured a piece of magic at the first extra hole, the par-5 18th, drilling his six iron from 195 yards to within 10 feet and two-putted for the winning birdie while Sagar found the water with his approach in a tense finish to the event.

A good two shots in front overnight, Marshall closed with a topsy-turvy 73 to reach eight-under for the tournament in regulation, forcing a playoff with his compatriot, who playing four groups behind, carded a final round 68 to set the clubhouse target.

Morocco’s Younes El Hassani returned a tidy final round 71 to share third on six under in a four-man group that included Sixto Casabona-navarro of Spain, Fredrik Lindblom of Sweden and Chile’s Antonio Costa.
