PGA Tour - Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard

Matt Every birdied the final hole to claim back-to-back Arnold Palmer Invitational titles after an enthralling final-day battle at Bay Hill.

The 31-year-old rolled in a nerveless 15-foot putt on the final green to cap a superb seven-birdie 66 which proved enough to clinch a one-shot victory over 54-hole leader Henrik Stenson after the Swede faltered down the stretch.

Stenson had covered the final four holes in four under par for two consecutive days, but he bogeyed the 15th after three-putting and could not better par at the next two before his 20-foot putt to force a play-off at the 18th slid past the cup on the high side.

The defending champion then piled the pressure on the final pairing after he followed a perfect drive up the 18th fairway with a solid approach to the rear of the green, and his slippery, downhill birdie putt caught enough of the hole to drop in the left side.

Sunshine Tour – Investec Cup Trophy

There’s a certain satisfaction in this day and age of communication by social media when you tweet that you need a low round to win a tournament – then you do it. Jaco Ahlers got his tweet dream to come true on Sunday and took home the Investec Cup Trophy.

Like his other two victories on the Sunshine Tour, this one came in a play-off as he weathered the challenge of Jaco van Zyl to clinch victory at the third extra hole as both players struggled to keep their game intact under the pressure of competing for so much money.

With his victory, Ahlers climbed to the top of the Chase to the Investec Cup rankings and took home R3.5-million over and above his tournament winnings of R163,400 – the winner’s share of the R10-million Bonus Pool. It was his biggest payday as a professional and confirmation of a coming-of-age process which began when he won a four-hole play-off to take the Lion of Africa Cape Town Open last November.

Web.com – Chile Classic

Dawie van der Walt fired a six-under 65 Sunday and earned his first career title, taking the Chile Classic by two strokes over rookie Erik Barnes.

Van der Walt was in a dogfight for most of the final round and held steady in the wind before closing with a birdie on the 18th to distance himself just enough to collect the first-place check for $108,000. The 32-year-old transplanted Texan finished at 21-under 263, two in front of his playing partner Barnes, who closed with three consecutive birdies for a 5-under 66 and solo second place.

The final pairing of Wes Roach (68) and 54-hole leader Craig Barlow (69) each held parts of the lead throughout the afternoon but had trouble down the stretch. Roach turned the front nine at Club de Golf Mapocho in four-under but eight pars and a bogey on the back left him three off the pace. Barlow had an ace the 214-yard, eighth hole and was tied for the lead as late as the 14th hole, but bogeys at the 15th and 17th cost him a shot at victory.

PGA LatinoAmerica – 68th Avianca Colombia Open presented by Arturo Calle

Holding a two-stroke lead to enter the final round, Diego Velásquez birdied two of the first three holes on Sunday to extend his lead to four. He never looked back!

The Colombian proved to be a worthy champion of the 68th Avianca Colombia Open presented by Arturo Calle for his first career win on PGA TOUR Latinoamérica.

A bogey-free 65 on a beautiful sunny day secured a solid six-stroke win over Alex Moon of Dallas, Texas. Moon carded a 69 to claim runner-up honors, five strokes ahead of a trio that tied for third.

Velásquez finished the week at 18-under 266 and his margin of victory matched the third largest ever in four seasons of PGA TOUR Latinoamérica.

“This is unbelievable. I think this is a tournament every Colombian golfer wants to win and I feel that the hard work I have put in has paid off,” said the 27-year old from Bogota after a dominating performance at the stunning Club Los Lagartos.

The Colombia Open was the opening event of the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica season, marking the start of a race that will take the Tour’s top-players to the Web.com Tour in 2016.

As the first champion of the season Velásquez collected $31,500 in prize money to rank No. 1 in the Order of Merit that will identify “Los Cinco” who would move up at the end of the year.

“I want to go back to the Web.com Tour,” said Oregon State University graduate who played on the Web.com Tour in his second year as a professional in 2012. “There’s a long way to go. We have 18 more tournaments ahead of us this season. This is a good start for me and I think that if I keep playing like this, working hard on my game, it’s going to be a great year.”

Asian Development Tour – PGM CCM Rahman Putra Championship

Phachara Khongwatmai secured a convincing four-shot win at the PGM CCM Rahman Putra Championship to become the youngest champion on the Asian Development Tour (ADT) on Saturday.

The immensely talented Thai, who turns 16 in May, showed little signs of pressure when he fired two eagles for a brilliant six-under-par 66 and a 20-under-par 268 total at the Kelab Rahman Putra Malaysia.

He defeated local hope Danny Chia and Shane Smith of the United States, who closed with a 70 and 64 respectively, to settle for tied second at the RM200,000 (approximately US$55,400) ADT event.

Sutijet Kooratanapisan (69) of Thailand finished a further shot back on 273 while Quincy Quek of Singapore, the halfway stage leader, finished fifth following a 69 for a 274 total.

Phachara, who held the share of the overnight lead with Chia, got off to a flying start when he eagled the third hole from 10-feet before making the turn in 34.

He pulled clear from the chasing pack with a huge 25-footer eagle on hole 10 before ending his round on a flourish with birdies on holes 15 and 18.

The victory is a huge boost in his fledging career. He made headlines when he won the 2013 Hua Hin Open on home soil at the age of 14 before turning professional in August last year.

He also earned an Asian Tour card at Qualifying earlier this year after winning his first professional title in Thailand.

“I’m very happy with this win,” smiled Phachara. “I couldn’t have asked for a better way to win a tournament because my game was very good. I was a bit nervous but it helps when you have two eagles in your round! My short game really helped me this week.”
