PGA TOUR – The PLAYERS Championship

Martin Kaymer survived a late wobble to claim a dramatic one-shot victory in the Players Championship at Sawgrass.

Three in front with five to play, the German looked to be in total control before play was halted for a lightning threat.

But when play resumed it appeared the 90-minute break had knocked Kaymer out of his stride and a double bogey at 15 cut his lead to just one from clubhouse leader Jim Furyk.

A par at 16 kept Kaymer in front but he looked to have made a complete mess of the par three 17th when his tee-shot just avoided water and he fluffed his chip to leave himself a 29 footer for par.

But just when it seemed he would fall back into a tie with Furyk on 12-under, the 2012 Ryder Cup hero drained his par putt to stay in front.

There was further drama at 18 when Kaymer finished 20 feet short of the green with his second but he got down in two to secure the $1.8m first prize with a final-round 71 and a winning total of 13-under.

European / Challenge Tour – Madeira Island open

Daniel Brooks claimed his maiden European Tour title at the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal – BPI, beating Scott Henry in a play-off on a day tinged with great sadness after the untimely death of caddie Iain McGregor at Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra.

It was a dramatic finale to a tournament which had been reduced to 36 holes due to adverse weather conditions, as Henry birdied the final three holes to card a four under par 68, move to nine under alongside Brooks and force extra holes.

It was a par that sealed the play-off victory for the Englishman, having carded a five under final round of 67, after he knocked his approach from the middle of the fairway to 12 feet past the pin in the first play-off hole.

Sunshine Tour – Investec Royal Swazi Open

Danie van Tonder stood at the 16th tee box of Royal Swazi Sun Country Club on Saturday and needed a birdie per hole for the next three holes in order to contend for the Investec Royal Swazi Open title. Over the following hour he played sublime golf to fill his birdie quota and finish in a tie for the lead on 48 points, which meant a sudden-death playoff.

During the first extra trip down the 18th hole the 23-year-old played his approach at the par-three to eight feet. He calmly sank the putt for birdie and celebrated his maiden victory, forcing Jacques Blaauw and Jared Harvey to settle for second place.

It was a long-awaited triumph for the Ebotse Golf Estate member, who came second at the Swazi Open in 2012 and was Sunshine Tour Rookie of the Year that season. Three years and 15 top-10s later the victory came.

Korean Golf Tour / One Asia - The 33rd GS Caltex Maekyung Open

Unheralded Park Jun-won fired a flawless five-under-par 67 on Sunday to win the one billion won (around U.S. $1 million) GS Caltex Maekyung Open by three shots at Namseoul Country Club, on the outskirts of the Korean capital.

The 27-year-old shared the third round lead with Park Sang-hyun (70), but eased away from his namesake on the back nine to finish the tournament at 15 under par and claim his first professional victory.

Asian Development Tour – PGA Northport Glenmarie

Malaysia’s Danny Chia enjoyed a successful title defence after defeating Sattaya Supupramai of Thailand on the third play-off hole at the PGM Northport Glenmarie Championship on Saturday.

Chia, who is still recovering from a shoulder injury, closed with a four-under-par 68 and had to go the distance with the talented Sattaya after they tied on 13-under-par 275 in regulation play at the RM200,000 (approximately US$60,000) Asian Development Tour (ADT) event.

Sattaya bowed out from the third extra hole on 17 to settle for second while Thailand’s Piya Swangarunporn finished third with a closing 67 to mark his best finish on the ADT this season at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club, Garden course.

Sattaya and Chia had to endure an agonizing wait before playing in the play-off as lightning forced a two-hour suspension just after the end of regulation play. The first two playoff holes were played on the 18 where both of them par before moving on to the 17 where Chia emerged victorious after Sattaya bogeyed.
